Brat Farrar

by Josephine Tey

Grade: Unfinished
Read: To Chapter 17 (page 148).

I decided that I liked Simon. And then in the eighth chapter (or even before then, possibly) I realized the ending. And I know Tey isn't just for the endings, like Agatha Christie has a slight tendency to be, but it still s lightly ruined it. And besides, I liked Simon.

But everything else was splendid. One of the best Josephine Tey's (although now that I think of it, that applies to most of hers that I've read...), and I think I'll try again some day.

Finally, a kindered soul! After finishing the book yesterday I went thru the blogs wondering if anybody was as disappointed in the book as I was. But people seem to love this book and then finally I found this post. The problem in appreciating that book is not because I am fond of Simon but what I find to be a weakness in plot. Tey wants us to sympathise with Brat, to like him, to favour him. And since he is actually cheating Simon of his inheritence than Simon as to be shown as a real mean and evil creature so that people do not mind what Brat is doing. So poor Simon who comes across as charming in the first chapter soon deteriorates into a shallow and selfish creature.

If you are interested you can read what I have written about the book on my blog: http://inkquilletc.blogspot.com/

Finally, a kindered soul! Yesterday, when I finished the book, I searched the blogs to see whether anyone was dissatisfied with the book. People seem to love it instead. And then I found our blog. My dissatisfaction is not because I am fond of Simon but what I feel is a weakness in the plot. Tey wants us to sympathise with Brat and since he is cheating Simon of his inheritence than Simon has to be demonised so that people do not feel bad about the fraud and continue to favour Brat. Thus, Simon who comes across as charming in the first chapter steadily deteriorates to a shallow and selfish fellow.

It was nice to discover your blog.

Thanks! I think I agree with you on the weakness of plot. But in general, I thought it was still well written.

I checked out your blog and it looks interesting! I'm a huge fan of books and book blogs. I actually started my blog just for me, so I could keep track of the books I read and remember what I thought of them, in case I want to recommend books to people. I didn't actually expect anyone to comment! So you're my first commenter, congratulations!
